The Hindu god Lord Shiva is honoured at Kedarnath, a temple. It is in the Garhwal Himalayas, which are part of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The temple is one of the four holy sites Hindus visit on their journey to the Char Dham. A temple is a popular pilgrimage place; every year, especially during the Char Dham Yatra, thousands of people go there to pray. During the Dwapara Yuga, when the temple was built, it is thought that the Pandavas, the heroes of the Hindu epic Mahabharata, did it.
Since the area is covered in snow in the winter, the Kedarnath temple is only open from April to November. During this time, the temple is closed, and the statue of Lord Shiva is taken to the nearby town of Ukhimath, where it is worshipped until the temple reopens in the spring.
The Kedarnath temple is situated at the head of the Mandakini river, considered holy by the Hindus. The temple is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and offers stunning views of the Himalayas. The nearest town to the temple is Gaurikund, which can be reached by road from Rishikesh and other nearby towns.
