On the Chadar trek to Leh Ladakh, most of the local porters wear gumboots, which are easy to find in Leh. This seems like the best and least expensive way to walk on the frozen Zanskar river. We will help you decide whether to buy or rent these gum boots in Leh.
Crampons aren't needed because wearing them all day makes it hard to walk. With crampons, it is also hard to walk on the uneven surface of the frozen Zanskar river. The crampons will break the river's ice, which could hurt people.
To keep water from freezing, it should be kept warm. In the morning, you usually get hot water in your water bottles. Keep this inside your day bag, not in the side pocket, so it doesn't get cold. The best way to keep water cool all day is to keep it in insulated water bottles.
You'll need sleeping bags that can handle temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius. These sleeping bags are only used by mountaineers on winter expeditions or when climbing Himalayan peaks above 6000m.
It is hard to trek on the frozen Zanskar river. A pair of walking sticks is a must. On the Chadar Trek, walking sticks are a must. They help trekkers stay steady on ice and keep them from falling.
Any camera would work; the problem might be with the batteries. When it's cold, the batteries lose power more quickly. Make sure you keep the batteries warm by putting them in your sleeping bag or inside your jacket so they don't die. Socks or other warm clothing should be used to wrap up the new batteries so they don't drain as quickly.
Yes, your first-aid kit should always be with you. Check with your doctor and make sure you have all the medicines you need. We'll also give you a list of things to bring. A basic first-aid kit will also be with us.
